Battle Of Unbeatens in WPIAL Class AA Match-Up

report notes | more reports

First place in the WPIAL Class AA Century Conference will be on the line tonight as the Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles will visit McKees Rocks to take on the Sto-Rox Vikings. Beside their similar 7-0 records, both teams share a number of things in common.

Both teams are coming off exciting wins with late-game heroics last week. Keystone Oaks outlasted Quaker Valley in a 14-7 overtime win, while Sto-Rox stole a win from South Park on a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Paul Jones to Nico Dimichele as time expired.

Big, athletic and experienced quarterbacks are at the helm of both offenses, as 6'4" senior Corey Bellovich leads the Golden Eagles' attack, averaging 32.4 points per game. Jones, at 6'3", is second in the WPIAL with 1,260 passing yards, and also has 15 passing touchdowns and five rushing touchdowns this season to pace the Vikings' 31 points per game average.

Perhaps the biggest match-up of the game could be when Sto-Rox has the ball. The Keystone Oaks defense has allowed only 32 points all season (4.6 points per game), third lowest among all WPIAL teams. The Golden Eagles revamped their defense in the off-season to produce a smaller, faster lineup to create better pursuit to the ballcarrier. So far, that adjustment has paid off and will have to continue to do so in order to contain Jones' all-around play-making ability.

Of note: The last time Keystone Oaks had a 7-0 record was 1947, when they were Dormont High School. Also, the Golden Eagles' most recent conference championship came in 1983 as they tied with Steel Valley for the WPIAL Class AAA crown; they moved to Class AA this season. Tonight's meeting marks the first time the two teams have met in almost 38 years. Sto-Rox beat Keystone Oaks, 21-14, on October 30, 1970.
