Brown Hauls In TD, Bell Plays Solid Game On Defense

Gateway's Dorian Bell and Corey Brown have earned many accolades as two of the best players in the area, both being named to the WPIAL and PIAA all-star teams. Last Saturday afternoon, they both showed why they are among the best high schoolers in the country.

The senior duo performed well in the face of adversity, overcoming possible injuries to come up big in a 30-17 victory for the East team over the West in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Brown hauled in a 34-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter, leaping over two defenders. He landed awkwardly in the end zone, his head bouncing off the artificial turf, but held onto the football, and soon walked off the field on his own power.

"He went up over two guys and made a circus catch that really seemed to get us going," said Gateway head coach Terry Smith, who coached the East team. "Corey made a big name for himself."

Bell made six tackles from his outside linebacker position, despite injuring his right thumb. He said he injured it when it struck an opponent's helmet late in the first half, and opted to have it examined once he returned home from Monroeville. But he relished the experience to play in a big-time national setting, as the game was televised on NBC.

"It was a great chance to practice with, and play against, the top 90 players in the country," Bell said. "You get to see what's coming at the next level."

Speaking of the next level, both players have committed to play at Ohio State next fall. The Buckeyes are led by former Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor, and have earned a berth in this year's Fiesta Bowl against Texas.
