Players Skipped School To Attend Celebration

A couple of players on the Valley High School boys' basketball team were among the estimated 350,000 in downtown Pittsburgh for last Tuesday's Super Bowl championship parade for the Steelers. The trouble is, they had a basketball game that night they had to play in.

Valley beat Knoch, 54-51, in a game that both players played in, and later had to be forfeited due to ineligibility rules. According to school district policy, students that participate in interscholastic athletics must be present in school the day of a game. Since both players missed school, they were ineligible to play that night as a result.

WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said that Valley forfeited out of recognition for their own rule. The WPIAL has no such rule declaring ineligibility for students who miss school that day.

Knoch, currently 5-6 in Class AAA Section 1, needs a win over Mars Monday night in order to make the playoffs. The forfeit loss will not hurt Valley's standing, as they are in third place and have already qualified.
