The Gateway School District and community has lost a longtime teacher, mentor and friend to thousands of students after a career spanning more than three decades.
Bob Moyer, who taught orchestra to students ranging from elementary to high school, passed away Saturday at the age of 55.
Moyer's career lasted 33 years, helping to turn notes on a piece of paper into music that students heard in their heads, felt in their hearts and created through their instruments.
"They really loved him from the time that they had him," said teacher Andrea Campbell of Moyer's connection with his students. "They grew up with him, fourth grade until the time they graduated."
Gateway graduate Nicole Jokola said joining the orchestra meant having a safe place to escape from the pressures of teen life.
"Every month or so we would have a Mr. Misty party -- it was like Mr. Misty from Dairy Queen -- and it's so random, but he loved to do things to make us happy, even if it had nothing to do with orchestra," said Jokola, a 2006 graduate.
Moyer's passion for music was as evident as his love for his students.
"He was jumping up and down as he was conducting. He really worked up a sweat because he was working so hard," said Campbell.
Still, nothing could replace the bond Moyer shared with his students.
"When they were seniors and graduated, he gave them each a rose and made them feel very special," said Campbell.
Moyer took a medical sabbatical before retiring at the end of the 2008 school year.
Current and former students have been sharing fond memories of Moyer online as news of his passing began to spread.
"Students know when you really care about them and he genuinely cared about his students," said teacher Laurie Carey.
Former student Jason Menz described Moyer as "someone who took his position as an educator to the degree where he would take his time to nurture your raw talents, to bring out the best he could find in you and make you see as an individual that not only did you have the talent to succeed, but you could achieve at that level over and over."
Funeral services for Moyer will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Somerset.
