Seven WPIAL Schools Still Alive In State Playoffs

PIAA CLASS AAAA

 

The WPIAL championship game participants will meet again Thursday afternoon when champion Hempfield Area (16-4) will meet runner-up Shaler (14-5) for the third time this season.

 

Hempfield defeated DuBois, 4-2, to advance to the quarterfinal round, while Shaler knocked off City League champion Brashear, 10-5. The game is scheduled for noon at North Allegheny.

 

 

PIAA CLASS AAA

 

WPIAL runner-up Trinity is the last local team standing, and they will meet Corry on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Slippery Rock University.

 

Trinity defeated Perry in the first round, 9-0, while Corry defeated West Allegheny, 10-0 in five innings. WPIAL champion Franklin Regional was beaten 2-1 by Punxsutawney.

 

 

PIAA CLASS AA

 

Three of four WPIAL qualifiers are still standing, as Riverside (19-1), Sto-Rox, and Greensburg Central Catholic (14-6) all advanced to the quarterfinal round.

 

Riverside and Greensburg Central meet Thursday at 3 p.m. at North Allegheny. Riverside beat Karns City, 4-1, in the first round, while Greensburg Central knocked off Northwestern, 10-9 in nine innings.

 

Sto-Rox will meet Bald Eagle Area at noon at Forest Hills High School in Sidman. Sto-Rox defeated Chestnut Ridge, 7-4, while Bald Eagle beat Bishop Canevin, 3-1, to advance.

 

 

PIAA CLASS A

 

Vincentian and Avonworth were the lone qualifiers for the state's smallest classification, but now Vincentian stands alone, and will meet Northern Cambria at 4 p.m. Thursday at Forest Hills.

 

Vincentian edged Cochranton, 3-2, in eight innings to advance, while Avonworth fell to Union City, 7-4.
