When rival schools are just a few miles apart on the highway, there is always expected to be a big showdown when the two meet. Our first Game of the Week for 2009 featured Penn Hills hosting Gateway in a game highlighted more by miscues than superlatives.

Gateway overcame seven turnovers -- three of them interceptions thrown by quarterback Rob Kalkstein -- to outlast Penn Hills, 19-7, in a rematch of last season's WPIAL Class AAAA first-round playoff.

Gateway had the momentum early off a 41-yard kick return by Brendon Felder and a 32-yard pass from Kalkstein to junior tight end Armstead Williams down the middle of the field, but on 2nd and Goal from the Penn Hills' 2-yard line, Kalkstein's pass into the end zone was tipped and intercepted by Cullen Christian for a touchback.

Gateway got back into the red zone on their second drive, aided by a 46-yard pass from Kalkstein to Dondi Kirby. But Shawn Brisker fumbled and Penn Hills linebacker Myles Davis recovered the ball on the 13-yard line, helping the Indians dodge yet another bullet.

Despite completing nine of his first 11 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown pass to Stephen Vranka in the first half, he also had two interceptions and a fumble, five turnovers for the Gators in all. Vranka's 21-yard catch-and-run made it 6-0 with about five minutes left in the second quarter (Eric Fitchwell's extra point attempt was blocked), and the score would remain that way until halftime.

In the third quarter Gateway switched gears, giving Orne Bey a few carries to show what he could do. Head coach Terry Smith says his team will use up to four different running backs at various points in the season, and Bey was the one to pick up the slack for the Gators.

He took his first carry for 59 yards, setting up a first down on the Penn Hills' 17 and putting the Gators in scoring position yet again. But it was all undone four plays later by Kalkstein's third interception at the hands of Davis.

Bey made his mark on the Gators' next possession with a 21-yard touchdown run to make it 13-0 late in the third quarter. He rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, all in the second half.

"He was a change of pace," Smith told Channel 4 Action Sports anchor John Meyer after the game. "He gave us a big time spark, and man, he took over in the second half."

"I was just waiting to get my chance," Bey said of his explosive second half, "let Dayonne [Nunley] and Brendon do their thing, and just wait my turn."

Penn Hills finally got on the board midway through the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Chaz Whittaker, starting his first game under center, found Raymon Harris on a quick pass that turned into a 34-yard touchdown, cutting the Indians' deficit to six at 13-7 with a Mike Ferraco extra point.

Gateway had the opportunity to put the game away in the fourth quarter, but Kalkstein was sacked by Walter Moultrie on a 4th-and-3 at the Indians' 21, turning the ball over on downs. But Bey got his chance to put it away on the next drive and he did so, diving for the corner of the end zone on a 15-yard run to put it away with 2:37 to go and erasing a slew of what could have been costly mistakes.

"That's what you always get in the first game," Bey said of the Gators' rocky first half. "We always start out rough a little bit, but we'll get rid of that later on in the season."

It was the third win in three meetings between the two teams in the last calendar year. The Gators also beat the Indians in last year's season opener.
