Some might think that as a football quarterback, Gateway senior Rob Kalkstein isn't much to look at; he's short (5-foot-11), thin (170 lbs.), and a soft-spoken guy with an outstanding GPA. But as this former Clearview Student-Athlete of the Week's footblal career has shown, once he gets under center, you can't help but watch.

As a four-year starter at quarterback and two-year captain for the Gators football team, Kalkstein has played in 44 consecutive football games dating back to his freshman season. He has played with an impressive list of teammates that are currently playing NCAA Division I football, such as Corey Brown, Dorian Bell, and Cameron Saddler, but it's the obscure signal-caller that is working his way toward more historical company.

(Rob Kalkstein has started in 44 consecutive games as Gateway's QB, and his coach described him as "our Brett Favre.")

During Gateway's October 3 win against Norwin, Kalkstein surpassed 5,000 passing yards for his career, making him only the 13th quarterback in WPIAL history to do so.

"It's a pretty good accomplishment, I would think, but it's something I didn't really think about," he said. "I didn't know I was reaching 5,000."

He completed 10 of 14 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for a score in last week's 35-17 win over Erie McDowell. So far this season Kalkstein has completed 57 of 90 passes (67%) for 1,204 yards and 13 touchdowns with only three interceptions, helping lead the Gators to a 7-0 record (4-0 in the Foothills Conference).

Kalkstein has been a vital part of a Gateway offense that is currently averaging more than 40 points per game. What's more, with 5,442 yards currently, he has a chance to pass 6,000, which would make him only the fourth ever to accomplish the feat, along with Steel Valley's Luke Getsy (6,010), South Fayette's Andrew DiDonato (6,573) and Sto-Rox's Adam DiMichele (6,741).

(Kalkstein is the 13th WPIAL QB to throw for 5,000 career yards, but could be the first in Class Quad-A to surpass 6,000)

While Kalkstein is not expected to match DiMichele for the all-time WPIAL record, joining this group would set him apart, as the others have done so in Class AA or A. He would become the first to do so in Class AAAA, the league's largest classification.

Gateway head coach Terry Smith described him as a "great young man, great student, and a great football player."

"His production has been immeasurable," Smith said. "He's set every record here at Gateway High School, and hopefully he can set some Quad-A records in the WPIAL and pass that 6,000 mark."

With less than 600 yards remaining that mark is quite realistic, seeing that Gateway has two more regular season games against Connellsville and McKeesport, and, having already clinched a playoff spot, will play at least one playoff game. Kalkstein made it clear that it's the games that he's worried about, not the numbers.

"I think that would be a great accomplishment to pass the 6,000 mark, but that's something I'd have to worry about after the season," he said. "Right now we're trying to prepare for each game, and try to finish off the season with a win, and I can worry about the records after the season.

(Despite the records and accomplishments, Kalkstein considers himself lucky to have played with so many talented teammates throughout his career.)

Smith says his quarterback's success is a byproduct of several factors.

"Robbie's like our Brett Favre," Smith said. "He hasn't missed a game, has not missed a snap his entire career. He's very durable, he's tough, he's got a great arm, he's a great decision-maker, and he's been fabulous for our program. It's been really easy coaching him."

So if a player could potentially reach such a milestone, one might expect Kalkstein to be a top-flight Division I prospect, except many teams have shied away from him, particularly because of his size. He has earned the attention of Duquesne, Robert Morris, and other schools in the Ivy and Patriot leagues, but he says he doesn't really worry about the criticism he has received over the years.

"The height thing I've heard about a lot," he said. "I've talked to a lot of coaches and my height was brought up a lot, but that's something I can't change. The only thing I can change is what I can do on the field and the plays that I make."
