The Foothills Conference Championship Is At Stake As Gateway (8-0) Faces McKeesport (7-1)

report notes | more reports

The best way to describe both Gateway's (8-0) and McKeesport's (7-1) offenses comes down to three words: pick your poison. This week's Eat 'n Park Game of the Week will feature the second-best (Gateway's 47.9 points per game) and third-best (McKeesport's 43.9) scoring offenses in the WPIAL.

McKeesport's triple-option offense has terrorized its opponents all season, while Gateway's balanced attack gives them the flexibility to score points in different ways while using several different players.

All in all, Friday night's matchup between the two could be a busy night for the scoreboard operator at McKeesport's Weigle-Schaeffer Stadium. It will also be the most critical game of the season for both teams: not only will the winner earn the Foothills Conference championship, they will likely be the top seed in the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.

Gateway is led by senior quarterback Rob Kalkstein, a four-year starter for the Gators and former Clearview Student-Athlete of the Week. So far this season he has completed 65% of his passes for 1,372 yards and 17 touchdowns with only three interceptions.

The Gators' offense has many weapons at its disposal, featuring three dangerous running backs in seniors Brendon Felder, former Clearview Student-Athlete of the Week Orne Bey, and Markie'd Jones. All three backs are averaging at least nine yards per carry -- Bey and Felder are both averaging at least 12 -- and have all scored at least 6 rushing touchdowns apiece so far this season.

The Gateway air attack features three more standouts in senior receivers Steve Vranka and Dayonne Nunley and junior tight end Armstead Williams. Vranka is the team's leading receiver with 20 receptions for 552 yards and nine touchdowns, while Nunley and Williams have combined for 21 receptions for 465 yards and five scores.

If it seems like a high number of Gateway players are scoring touchdowns in bunches, it's because it's true: six different players have scored at least three touchdowns this season, and 16 have scored at least once. No player has scored more than one in each of the last three games, scoring 24 touchdowns over that span.

McKeesport brings their own dangerous attack to the field with three different players having rushed for more than 400 yards this season, led by senior fullback Darien Robinson's 1,214. Senior quarterback Ty-Meer Brown has rushed for 11 touchdowns this season, while throwing for six touchdowns on only 15 pass attempts all season.

Needless to say the Tigers' attack is quite simple in that it is centered around the running game. The more difficult part is figuring out which player has the ball and stopping them before he breaks for the end zone.

Gateway won last year's season finale, 31-27, before making their playoff run to finish as runner-up in their championship game loss to Bethel Park at Heinz Field. McKeesport's lone loss this season came at the hands of St. Joseph's Prep of Philadelphia in the first week of the season.
