Clearview Student-Athlete Of The Week: Matt McCann

October 29, 2009
Keystone Oaks

There's something about Keystone Oaks running backs that is just special. Junior Matt McCann is the most recent, and some say, possibly the best of that group.

To quote baseball great Yogi Berra, it was like "deja vu all over again." Such was the case as our High School Playbook team visited Keystone Oaks High School to honor one of their running backs as our Clearview Federal Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week for the second year in a row.

Junior Matt McCann has rushed for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns so far this season on only 117 carries for the Golden Eagles, averaging over 10 yards per carry, putting him among the best running backs in the WPIAL. But the more impressive average on his resume is 3.5 -- his GPA.

Channel 4 Action Sports anchor John Meyer presented Matt with this week's award in front of the Keystone Oaks student body during "Senior Dress Up Day," as some of the students' Halloween costumes ranged from Pocahontas to Teletubbies to a pair that dressed up as "bacon & eggs."

McCann did his best job to dress down the Sto-Rox defense last Friday, as he rushed for 272 yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns, including the game-winning score with a little more than a minute left for a 27-20 win our Eat 'n Park Game of the Week. He became the second Keystone Oaks running back to be honored as the Clearview Student-Athlete of the Week in consecutive years: his good friend and former teammate Dion Wiegand was honored last year.

McCann and fellow junior running back Jordan Maddox have combined for over 2,100 yards rushing this season, and have a very good chance of being the only running back duo in the WPIAL to run for 1,000 yards apiece this season. Their "Thunder and Lightning" combination have helped the Golden Eagles to a 7-1 record this season and second place in the Century Conference.

Keystone Oaks will face Seton La-Salle, their Kelton Avenue rival, in their season finale at Dormont Stadium.
