Christian Brumbaugh, South Fayette (QB/DB): His 23 touchdown passes were tops in the WPIAL during the regular season, and his 1,593 passing yards were fourth-best. He's athletic, accurate, a born leader, and has a 4.2 GPA. He's the total package. Best of all, he's only a junior and he could be the area's top quarterback recruit next year.
Drew Carswell, Sto-Rox (WR/LB): This 6-foot-5, athletic specimen caught 44 passes for 656 yards and six touchdowns, and also registered 73 tackles on defense with four sacks and two interceptions. His size, speed and athleticism are now the Big East's problem: he's headed to Pitt.
Cody Cook, Beaver Falls (RB): He has been one of the best rushers in the WPIAL for quite some time, with 4,280 career yards in only three seasons. He rushed for 1,920 this season with 22 touchdowns, leading the Tigers to the WPIAL semifinals. Some Division I schools are showing interest, and the one who lands him will get a steal.
Alex Demczak, Keystone Oaks (OL/DL): You can call this two-time All-Century conference tackle "Al". During his junior and senior years he helped pave the way for three 1,000 rushers: Jordan Maddox, Matt McCann, and Dion Wiegand.
Shayne Dotson, South Park (RB/DB): He was the WPIAL's third leading rusher with 1,453 yards, but there wasn't much heard about him because of the Eagles' 4-5 record. But he practically carried the offense on his back and probably would have received more attention had he gotten into the end zone more.
Manasseh Garner, Brashear (TE/LB): It's no surprise he's going to Wisconsin to play the H-back position because there isn't much he can't do. He was the Bulls' leading receiver and second-leading tackler the past three seasons and helped lead them to back-to-back City League titles in 2007-08.
Drake Greer, Bishop Canevin (K/P): If there was an outstanding kicker award, it would probably be his to lose. He only kicked 13 extra points and six field goals for the lowly Crusaders, but also kicked 40% of his kickoffs into the end zone and 56% inside the 10-yard line. He was an All-Century conference selection in both his junior and senior seasons and is expected to go to a Division I school.
Zach Guiser, Greensburg Central Catholic (DB): The only freshman representative on the All-Playbook team intercepted seven passes for the Centurions, and helped them win their first ever WPIAL championship.
Rob Heatherington, Serra Catholic (QB/DB): He took over the quarterback position when his older brother and former co-Student-Athlete of the Week, T.J., graduated, and he showed he was good enough to be the leader of the Eagles' offense. He rushed for 886 yards, threw for 832, and scored 17 touchdowns during the regular season, helping his team to the Class A playoffs.
Deontae Howard, Clairton (RB/DB): Arguably the best running back in Class A the past few years, he surpassed 4,000 career yards during the championship win over Rochester, earning his third WPIAL championship. He's being pursued by several MAC schools, but don't be surprised if he and his 3.7 cumulative GPA end up at Towson State.
Trey Johnson, Rochester (RB): He did all he could for the Rams, rushing for 1,181 yards, catching 25 passes for 419 yards, scoring 25 touchdowns, and falling just short on the potential game-winning two-point conversion attempt in the WPIAL championship loss to Clairton. He dedicated his senior season to his younger brother, Alente, who has suffered from ulcerative colitis since he was 12.
Paul Jones, Sto-Rox (QB): He's going to the Army All-American Bowl in January, and then straight to Penn State, where he's enrolling early next semester. He is one of the top-rated prep quarterbacks in the country and threw for 1,637 yards and 16 touchdowns in limited duty after missing the beginning of the season with a broken ankle. He finished his career with 5,617 passing yards and 60 touchdown passes.
Jordan Maddox, Keystone Oaks (RB/LB): This speedy, 5'8" junior was the "lightning" to Matt McCann's "thunder", rushing for 1,430 yards on only 170 carries with 23 touchdowns. He was also a force on defense with 85 tackles (20 for losses) with 12 sacks and four forced fumbles. He should be one of the area's top players next year.
Jerome Mathews, Schenley (RB/DB): This four-year starter led the Spartans by example, rushing for 663 yards, scoring 18 touchdowns and making clutch play after clutch play on special teams and at cornerback. He helped bring Schenley their first City League title in 10 years and rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns in their 54-0 PIAA playoff win over Punxsutawney before falling to Erie Cathedral Prep.
Matt McCann, Keystone Oaks (RB/DB): The second KO running back in consecutive years to be named Student-Athlete of the Week, he racked up 1,800 rushing yards on only 176 carries (over 10 yards per carry) with 21 TD's. He was also one of the leaders of the Golden Eagles' defense with 158 tackles and nine sacks. He and backfield mate Jordan Maddox were arguably Western Pennsylvania's best two-way duo, and will both be back next year.
David Miller, Greensburg Central Catholic (RB): There was a debate last year as to whether or not he deserved to be named this team. But this season he removed all doubt, leading the WPIAL in scoring for the second year in a row and putting the stamp on his career with 203 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Centurions in the WPIAL championship game against Aliquippa.
Anthony Rizza, Seton-LaSalle (QB): He was the WPIAL's leading passer this season, completing 126 of 210 passes for 1,654 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also rushed for 537 yards and seven scores. Remember how fun it was to watch him and Christian Brumbaugh go at it in Week 6?
Kevin Weatherspoon, Clairton (WR/DB): This 6'0", 180-pound burner was a human highlight reel during his career at Clairton. He has racked up over 600 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns so far this season, and made a spectacular touchdown catch off a deflection that was the difference in the WPIAL Class A championship win over Rochester. He has been recruited to play receiver at Pitt.
Jimmy Zubik, Avonworth (RB/DB): This former Student-Athlete of the Week has helped put the Antelopes on the WPIAL football landscape: 1,319 rushing yards, 19 total touchdowns, and five interceptions on defense. He was a first-team All-Eastern conference running back and was also the conference's Offensive Player of the Year.
