WPIAL Has New Look For 2010-11 Football Seasons
|
|
The WPIAL will have slight facelift for the 2010-11 football seasons. The proposed realignment with the PIAA will not occur, but with the addition of five schools, several conferences have been changed.
The five new teams will be Erie McDowell, Altoona, Central Valley, Hollidaysburg and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Central Valley is the result of the merger between Center and Monaca, while OLSH will be in the inaugural year of its football program.
McDowell, previously a regular season member of the Class AAAA Foothills Conference, is now a full-fledged member of the Northern Seven (formerly the Northern Six). Altoona will be added to the AAAA Big East.
Central Valley will be added to the AAA Parkway Conference, while Hollidaysburg will play in the Keystone. OLSH, despite being its western location in Coraopolis, will play in the Class A Eastern Conference.
With the addition of these new programs, some conferences have been expanded and re-shuffled. Another reason is the movements of already existing programs.
Franklin Regional, formerly of the Greater Allegheny Conference, is the second new member of the Keystone. South Park, formerly of the AA Century Conference, has moved up to AAA, making what was once the Big Seven now the Big Eight.
Class A's version of the Big Seven now has a new look as well with the addition of Sto-Rox, who moved down from AA. Bishop Canevin is another AA team that took the option of moving down a class, joining OLSH in the Eastern Conference.
One AA school who had the option of moving down due to low male enrollment was Aliquippa, but they opted to stay in the Midwestern Conference. One new addition to AA was Steel Valley, who moved down from the AAA Big Seven to join the Century Conference.
