North Catholic Gets Defensive, Stuns Jeannette

report notes | more reports

North Catholic entered Saturday's WPIAL Class AA boys' basketball championship game facing a tall task in defending champion Jeannette. But the Trojans rode a second half surge sparked by an aggressive defense to win, 51-44, creating a rare sweep for both boys' and girls' programs, with the girls having won the Class A championship the night before.

The afternoon matinee looked very similar to the two boys' championship games that preceded it. It featured a second half meltdown for Jeannette (i.e. Highlands in the AAA final), combined with an upset over a defending champion for North Catholic (i.e. Sewickley Academy over Serra Catholic in the A final).

North Catholic opened the game on a 7-2 run before Jordan Hall's three-pointer brought Jeannette within two, but then the Trojans exploded for eight straight points, highlighted by a Henry Pwono slam on a back door bounce pass from Jesse Long. The senior center finished with 16 points, and Long led all scorers with 17.

Hall, a senior guard headed to Ohio State to play football, scored six points in the first half on two three-pointers, but throughout the game, his scoring came in small bursts as he was shut out in the second quarter. But senior guard/forward Moziah Harris helped keep Jeannette in the game, and the Jayhawks trailed, 27-22, at the half.

Some former Jeannette stars were among the spectators, namely, alums Gerald Foster and Terrelle Pryor. Foster, a star basketball and football player for the Jayhawks in the 90's, went on to play football at Duquesne, while Pryor, also a two-sport star, is now the starting quarterback at Ohio State.

Jeannette started the third quarter with a 6-0 run, capped off by a Cameron Baradzeij jumper with 5:45 remaining to put the Jayhawks ahead by one. Then the two teams would match each other shot for shot as the lead changed ten times, ending with Jesse Long's layup in the middle of the lane to put the Trojans ahead with 54 seconds remaining.

Going into the fourth it appeared the contest would be the final round of a slugfest with the two teams trading baskets until the final horn, but North Catholic went on a 7-0 run to start the quarter, ending with Joe Long's transition layup less than a minute and a half in. Hall's layup with 5:16 remaining broke Jeannette's scoring drought, sparking seven straight points for the Jayhawks to pull them within three, but that's the closest they would ever come again.

North Catholic's 3-2 zone defense stepped up its intensity in the fourth, forcing several turnovers and missed shots. The Trojans outscored the Jayhawks, 12-8 in the final frame, with five of Jeannette's points coming from Hall, who finished with 15.

Joe Long's two free throws with 33 seconds remaining sealed the game for North Catholic, earning the Trojans their first WPIAL boys' championship in school history. Both teams have qualified for the PIAA playoffs, as Jeannette will look to defend its state title.
